The colors are a crap shoot. What you can do is hook them up
Once you have the connected one of two things will occur -- they will work or they will work, backwards. If they run backwards, reverse them.

Thanks for posting the instructions. I am having a couple of issues. First of all the printer will not turn on. There is power at the power supply and the input on to the ramps board. the LEDs and fans are not turning on. Wonder if there is another wiring that was missed.

Here is an image of the board with everything wired up except for the ramps fan... :)
    IMG_20170319_111033._small.jpg

    1. Are the LEDs in the right position? there is no power supplied to those pins
    2. the connector in the lower left, is that in the correct position and orientation?
    3. I noticed that the communication pins on the Arduino were bent when the ramps board was removed, i assume that this should not be bent out of the way and i must of done that :(

    TIA,

    Jason

The top-left green plug looks like it it missing half of the input power connections.
All four of the inputs should be wired... I only see two (maybe just a poor picture).

There are two 12v rails coming in on that connector, but they carry different amperage ratings in case you provide different sources.

Ditto. Your missing your power on the green connector. As far as the leds, wire them direct to the power supply 12v. Its easier and they will be brighter with no flickering, you dont have to but thats what i did

Open a troubleshooting thread for that.

Frankly it is all related because my bet is that the Arduino is not getting powered correctly.

Id double check your hotend hookup. Those look like powerwires and not the insulated wires coming from the heaterblock ?

Scratch that forgot the oem wiring isnt the insulated heater wires lol.

In your picture far left top. There isnt a set of wires on the first two terminal spots. If there is please take a better photo. Im guessing there isnt wires there feom the powersupply thus not powering the board ???

Ok.... rewired the fan and LED to the 11A and 5A 12Vdc, respectively. When the printer turns on the LEDs fire right up and fan, well does what a fan does... :)

I will open up a new thread... thanks.

I unplugged everything and replugged it all back in and the arduino is responding.

    two issues:
    1. chatters and does not move in the left/right axis
    2. on Z only one stepper motor is moving

    thoughts?

Still should be in a troubleshooting thread not a project one, but...

    1. Is probably a weak or poorly tuned stepper driver
    2. is probably the same as #1 :) Are they both hooked to the same Z axis stepper driver (the standard RAMPS has two stepper driver connections on the Z)?

Keep the rest of the troubleshooting in a thread for it -- I don't want to have to move all of this over there.

You are going to need to rewrite the firmware to make that work*.

I think there are some other R1 dual-extruder threads on here. You can post there and ask some of those folks. Or start a new thread.

I did not do a dual-extruder mod for the R1, only for the C2 (different firmware)

*or take the newer 1.10 version and customize the configuration.h to match your machine.

The R1+ is the only one that uses the Second Extruder for a Z motor.

I followed the instructions to the tee, except i wired in the leds and fan directly to the 12v power supply. When I run the mattercontrol 3d printer setup, all it says is "attempting to connect" and its been like this for a solid half hour, what can I do?

I've responded to your pm. Either upload photos ,good clear ones, there or here so we can check it out. Did you replace just the ramps or the arduino also?

Also, depending on where you got it, I have had batches of bad RAMPS boards. Early this year I had to swap 3 to get 1 working one... They are really cheap and often cheaply made. I usually use the combo-kits, but that batch I just bought individually (I already had plenty of Arduinos and stepper drives) from other sellers. Had to send them all back (Prime covered it, but still a hassle).
