Post your firmware you are trying to complie as a zip file on Dropbox or Google drive and then share it so I can take a look

I'm new to Google Drive and Dropbox so I'm not familiar with them but the firmware I used was directly from the robo 3D R1 firmware website It was the one marked for 8mm I used that then opened it up in Arduino uncommented the rep-rap discounted full graphic smart controller also uncommented the LCD USB

If there is a newer or better firmware to use for the R1 I would gladly use that

Let me look at what you had. There is not a lot to be gained by changing the firmware. Best would be to wait until Marlin 1.10 branch is stable.

Unzip the attached files into the Marlin source folder and they will replace the ones that need editing.
Or edit it yourself and you will have a better understanding of what is wrong :)

Well now I seem to have got it working but after I flash the firmware I still get no display.I'm now using Arduino 1.8.3 and the robo beta version firmware. I also copied and pasted the files that were suggested but still no display, it does flicker when I turn the dial

Did you update the connfiguration.h to set the configuration to include the correct LCD?

Well, it is always possible you have a bad LCD. I have installed a number of the Full Graphic and regular LCDs and had a few bad ones in the mix (2 bad full graphic ones and one of the RepRap Discount ones). They are cheaply made (in China) electronics.

If your firmware is correct it will just work. Make sure you have the two cables connected correctly... one or both of those on wrong will also give you no display. Won't kill the unit, but it will not work

Don't assume the cables are correct if they came preinstalled. There were a number of them that came preinstalled incorrectly.
